Yogyakarta, often called Jogja, is a city on the island of Java in Indonesia known for its traditional arts and cultural heritage. Its roots date back to the 18th century as the center of the ancient Mataram Kingdom. Surrounded by the remnants of ancient civilizations, it houses the majestic temple complexes of Borobudur and Prambanan, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is a bustling hub of education, culture, and history, coupled with a vibrant street food scene and bustling markets. Yogyakarta is also known for its unique form of government; it is the only region in Indonesia that is still governed by a precolonial sultanate, the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. The current Sultan, Hamengkubuwono X, serves as the hereditary governor of the region. The locals are known for their warm hospitality and deep respect for Javanese traditions. Yogyakarta continues to balance modernity with traditional values, manifesting in its lively performing arts scene, ranging from shadow puppet shows and gamelan music to contemporary dance and theater productions.
