Type of destination: Cultural, Heritage Site
Ideal visit duration: Half-day to Full-day
Prambanan Temple, also known as Candi Prambanan or Rara Jonggrang, is a striking example of Hindu temple architecture located near Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This grand temple complex was built in the 9th century and is dedicated to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu), and the Destroyer (Shiva). Prambanan stands as the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Its tall and pointed architecture is typical of Hindu temple design, with the largest temple standing at 47 meters high. The temple is also famed for its intricately carved stone walls, depicting various episodes from the Ramayana epic. Equally impressive are the temple grounds, which allow visitors to explore the compound's many shrines and structures. In addition to its striking beauty and historical significance, Prambanan is also famous for hosting traditional Javanese dance performances during full moons. Despite being heavily damaged by earthquakes over the centuries, reconstruction efforts have preserved its majesty for current and future generations.
