Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 30 minutes
In the charming town of Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar, stands the proud and historic Purcell Tower. This clock tower has been a significant landmark since its construction, symbolizing the colonial legacy of the British era. It's situated in the town center, making it an easily accessible point of interest for visitors. The structure was reportedly a gift from Queen Victoria to the local Burmese people and has since become an iconic representation of Pyin Oo Lwin's heritage. The architecture of the tower is reminiscent of British colonial design with its detailed brickwork and clock face that is still functioning to this day. Pyin Oo Lwin, formerly known as Maymyo, was a summer retreat for British colonial administrators, and the Purcell Tower remains one of the many remnants of that time. Surrounded by a host of other attractions such as botanical gardens, waterfalls, and colonial houses, it serves as a reminder of the town's rich history while drawing tourists to this highland city often referred to as 'The City of Flowers' for its lush landscapes.
