The National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens are a 177-hectare garden situated in the hilly town of Pyin Oo Lwin, formerly Maymyo, in Myanmar (Burma). Founded in 1915 by Alex Roger, a forest officer, and later developed by the government into a botanical garden, it was modeled after Kew Gardens in England. With a scenic setting encompassing a wide variety of indigenous and exotic plant species, the gardens offer a blend of beautifully landscaped grounds, including a large pond, flower beds, an orchid garden, a strolling area, and even a mini zoo. The collections of flora spread over the area include orchids, dahlias, roses, and many other plant species from around the world. Visitors can also enjoy the garden's collection of butterflies and birds, making it a haven for nature lovers and researchers alike. The tranquil setting provides not only a beautiful display of Myanmar's plant life but also an educational experience for those interested in horticulture and botany.
