Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) in Tajikistan, is a small, mountainous town situated along the Panj River, which forms a natural border with Afghanistan. Nestled at an elevation of approximately 2,200 meters above sea level, Khorog is known for its beautiful alpine scenery and serves as a gateway to the Pamir Mountains, often called the 'Roof of the World'. Despite its remote location, Khorog maintains a unique charm, with a blend of Pamiri and Soviet cultural influences. It houses the high-altitude Central Park, the serene Botanical Garden – one of the highest in the world, and the Khorog Regional Museum with exhibits on local culture and the region's natural history. The town is an important economic and administrative center and has the Aga Khan Lycée, an educational institution funded by the Aga Khan Development Network. The university town ambiance is enriched by the presence of the University of Central Asia, adding to its diverse demographic. Despite its small size, Khorog is also known for its vibrant bazaars, local handicrafts, and the annual Roof of the World Festival, which celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of the Pamir region.
