History of Tourism in Safed
The roots of tourism in Tzfat can be traced back to the 16th century when it became known as the center of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah. Pilgrims and scholars flocked from around the world to immerse themselves in the city’s sacred studies and to visit the graves of prominent Jewish mystics and sages buried there. This laid the groundwork for a tourism industry that would blossom in both spiritual and historical contexts.
In the years following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Tzfat rapidly became a venue for international visitors seeking spiritual growth, healing, and historical exploration. Its old synagogues, narrow alleys, and historic sites relating to the Jewish diaspora became key attractions. The annual Klezmer Festival, which celebrates Jewish soul music, along with art galleries and craft shops also contribute significantly to Tzfat’s tourism profile.
