Type of destination: Church
Ideal visit duration: 1 to 2 hours
The Saint Gayane Church stands majestically in the religious city of Vagharshapat, commonly known as Echmiadzin, within the Armavir Province of Armenia. This historic church, a remarkable example of the Armenian classical architecture of the 7th century, was built by Catholicos Ezra I in the year 630. It is dedicated to Saint Gayane, who was martyred for her Christian faith and whose relics are believed to be interred within the premises. The church's simplistic yet appealing design features a domed basilica layout. The central dome soars over the nave with a drum and conical peak characteristic of traditional Armenian church design, while semi-circular arches and vaults complement the structure's interior. Saint Gayane, along with the entire Echmiadzin Cathedral complex, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing Armenia's rich ecclesiastical heritage. The church is not just a spiritual center but also a popular pilgrimage site, reflecting an enduring testament to Armenia's early adoption of Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD. The surrounding gardens add to its serene atmosphere and invite quiet reflection.

Very cultural and religious place to visit!!! Also not far from main church of Armenian apostolic branch- Mayr Ator.
It was actually must see in Vagharshapat (Ejmiatsin), the old church with historical cemeteries and with cemetery of holy virgin Gayane, one of the main Virgins that came from Byzandium empire.
