Saint Stephanos Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, is an ancient and significant Armenian monastery located in a deep canyon within the mountainous region of North West Iran, close to the borders of Azerbaijan. Found approximately 16 kilometers west of Jolfa city, East Azerbaijan Province, it clings to a rugged hillside above the right bank of the Darreh Shahr river. The monastery dates back to the 9th century and has been rebuilt multiple times due to damage by natural disasters, wars, and religious conflicts. It is considered a fine example of Armenian architectural design and is adorned with intricate frescoes and carvings. In 2008, this stunning piece of historical architecture was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List as part of the Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran. The remote and picturesque setting of the monastery, alongside its historical significance, makes it an important pilgrimage site and attracts tourists from around the world who seek to experience its serenity and architectural beauty.
