The monastery is situated on the banks of the Stod River and houses a famous Buddhist statue. Sani Monastery is known for its unique architecture and historical significance, as it is believed to be the oldest religious site in the entire region of Ladakh and Zanskar. The Gonpa, as monasteries are known locally, is associated with the Drukpa Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism. It is home to the Kanika Stupa, which is said to have been constructed by Emperor Kanishka of the Kushan dynasty in the 2nd century.
