Phuktal Monastery, one of the most isolated monasteries in the Zanskar region of Ladakh, India, is a breathtaking cliffside structure. Founded in the early 12th century, the monastery is home to about 70 monks and holds significant spiritual importance. Built into the mouth of a cavern on the cliffside of a lateral gorge of the Lungnak River, Phuktal looks like a honeycomb from a distance. This monastery is adorned with murals, ancient texts, and exquisite frescoes which tell stories from the past. It has a distinctive architecture with balconies and windows protruding out of the cliff face, providing an impressive view of the valley below. The remote location of Phuktal makes it accessible only by foot or horseback after a day's trek, providing an adventurous journey for visitors. Phuktal Monastery is not just a center for spirituality; it is also a hub of social education, where monks teach local children. The monastery observes various rituals and festivals, making it a vibrant cultural site.
