Food History of Sanssouci Palace and Park, Potsdam, Germany

The Sanssouci Palace and its park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, served as the summer palace of King Frederick the Great of Prussia. Its architecture and art reflect the grandeur preferred by the king, and similarly, the culinary preferences of the era exemplified lavish dining and sophisticated palates.

The king enjoyed simple meals himself, yet royal banquets depicted a different story. The foods served were heavily influenced by French cuisine, which was considered the epitome of gastronomical elegance at the time. Many dishes consisted of fresh produce from the extensive fruit and vegetable gardens on the palace grounds. Frederick the Great took a keen interest in agriculture and aimed at self-sufficiency; thus, he promoted the cultivation of figs, grapes, and various other fruits and vegetables.
