Type of destination: Religious Site
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Shahe Doh Shamshira Mosque, meaning the 'Mosque of the King of Two Swords,' is situated in the heart of Kabul, Afghanistan, along the Kabul River. Built in the 1920s during the reign of King Amanullah Khan, the mosque is a striking example of neo-classical architecture, which is unusual for an Islamic place of worship and a testament to the king's efforts to modernize the country. Its distinctive Italianate style features a bright yellow facade and is reminiscent of Istanbul's Ortaköy Mosque. The mosque's name derives from a legend about Khalid ibn al-Walid, a companion of Prophet Muhammad known for his exceptional military prowess and given the title of 'The Drawn Sword of God.' The mosque has two main floors and an interior decorated with inscriptions of verses from the Quran. Despite damage during various conflicts, including the civil war, the mosque remains a symbol of resilience and faith for the local Muslim community. It serves both as a place of worship and a landmark of Kabul's rich cultural tapestry. The mosque is not only a religious site but also contributes to the city's social life, functioning as a meeting place for locals.
