Food History of Shibam Mudbrick HighRise Buildings, Shibam, Yemen

The Shibam Mudbrick HighRise Buildings, also known as the "Manhattan of the Desert," is a remarkable example of early vertical urban planning. Shibam, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Yemen, is renowned for its ancient mudbrick-made high-rise buildings that date back to the 16th century. The food history in this region reflects the broader culinary traditions of Yemen, deeply influenced by the spices, trading history, and cultural interactions through centuries of trade along the Incense Route.

The traditional cuisine of Shibam has evolved to incorporate a rich array of spices such as cardamom, cumin, saffron, and coriander. Such spices and ingredients were indicative of Yemen's position as a significant trading post where spice and commodity exchanges were commonplace. Agriculture in the surrounding valleys of Hadhramaut contributes dates, cereals, and other staples that form the foundation of the local diet.
