Shigar Fort, also known as Fong Khar, meaning the Palace on the Rock, is a 17th-century fortification located in Shigar Valley in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. It was originally built as a palace for the local ruler of the time, the Raja of Amacha Dynasty, and later served as a fort. Restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service in Pakistan (AKCSP), it has been transformed into a museum and a luxury hotel managed by Serena Hotels. The fort presents a fine example of the indigenous architectural tradition of Baltistan, intricately designed with wood carvings and adorned with beautiful frescoes. It serves as a gateway to the high peaks of the Karakoram Range, with the notable K2 mountain nearby, and is set amidst a landscape of verdant farms and fruit orchards. The fort's restoration has earned it several preservation awards, acknowledging its historical value and its role in the promotion of cultural heritage tourism in the region.
