Skardu is a town and the capital of Skardu District, located in the Gilgit−Baltistan region of Pakistan. Skardu is situated in the shadows of the Karakoram mountain range and offers a gateway to lofty peaks, including the infamous K2, the world's second-highest peak. The town is perched at an elevation of 2,286 meters (7,500 feet) and is surrounded by starkly beautiful terrain that includes vast stretches of hilly terrain interspersed with numerous high-altitude lakes. Skardu serves as the base for trekkings and mountaineering expeditions. It boasts rich cultural heritage sites like Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace, Buddhist rock carvings, and the ancient Skardu Fort. Skardu’s cold desert, known as the Sarfaranga Desert, is also a unique feature- one of the highest deserts in the world. The region is known for its apricots, walnuts, and other dry fruits.
