Best Time To Visit St Mark's Square (Venice) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit St Mark's Square, Venice, Italy

The ideal time to visit St Mark's Square, known as Piazza San Marco in Italian, is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to early November). During these periods, the weather is usually mild and pleasant, offering comfortable conditions to explore the opulent architecture, the Basilica di San Marco, and the iconic Campanile without the discomfort of the summer heat or the winter chill. Visiting in the early morning is highly recommended as it allows you to see the piazza in a calmer state before the day's tourists arrive. Additionally, this is a magical time as the sun begins to shower light over the historic buildings, providing a serene atmosphere and picture-perfect moments.

Timing your visit to avoid the acqua alta, or high water, which can flood the square due to Venice's unique tidal phenomenon, is also crucial. This typically occurs in late autumn and winter. Moreover, to avoid the peak tourist season, it's best to sidestep the crowded summer months, especially July and August, when the combination of high temperatures, humidity, and throngs of tourists can detract from the experience. Visiting during the Venice Biennale, a world-renowned art exhibition held biennially between May and November, can offer a unique cultural experience; however, it's important to book accommodations well in advance during this event due to increased demand.
