How To Reach Taichung

Welcome to Taichung, Taiwan!

Taichung is a vibrant and accessible city located in the western part of Taiwan. Whether you're coming from international locations or traveling domestically within Taiwan, here are several ways to reach this exciting destination:

By Air

Taichung International Airport (RMQ) is the city's main airport, welcoming both domestic and international flights. It is located approximately 24 kilometers from the city center. To get to the city from the airport, you can take:

  • Taxis: Available at the taxi ranks outside the airport.
  • Bus services: There are multiple bus lines that connect the airport with Taichung city center and other destinations.
  • Rental cars: Several companies have their counters at the airport.

If you’re flying into Taiwan from abroad, you might land at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) located near Taipei. From there, you can take the High-Speed Rail (HSR), a bus, or drive to Taichung.

By High-Speed Rail (HSR)

Taichung is well connected via the High-Speed Rail network. The Taichung HSR station is located in Wuri District, a short distance from the city center. You can take:

  • HSR: from Taipei or Kaohsiung and other major cities. The journey from Taipei takes about an hour.
  • Local trains or buses: to transfer from Taichung HSR station to the downtown area.

By Train

The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) operates train services that connect Taichung with other cities. Taichung Train Station is conveniently located in the city center. There are various classes of trains available, from slow local trains to faster limited express services.

By Bus

Several bus companies operate intercity routes to and from Taichung. The city has many bus terminals; the most commonly used is Taichung Chaoma Bus Station. Buses provide a less expensive alternative to trains and can be a good option if traveling from nearby cities or areas not serviced by the HSR.

By Car

Driving to Taichung is straightforward with well-maintained highways connecting it to other major cities and regions:

  • National Highway 1 (Zhongshan Highway): North-South highway linking Taiwan.
  • National Highway 3 (Formosa Freeway): Another North-South route providing an alternative to Highway 1.
  • National Highway 4 (Changua-Taichung Expressway): Connects the western part of Central Taiwan.
  • Once in Taichung

Public transportation within Taichung is highly developed. You can use city buses, which have a free ride policy up to 10 kilometers when using an EasyCard or iPass. For personal comfort, taxi services and car rentals are also readily available throughout the city.

We hope you have a wonderful time exploring all that Taichung has to offer!
