The Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha, is a large bronze statue of a Buddha Amoghasiddhi, located at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island, in Hong Kong. The statue symbolizes the harmonious relationship between man and nature, people and religion. It is a major center of Buddhism in Hong Kong and a popular tourist attraction.
The Tian Tan Buddha stands at a height of 34 meters (112 feet) including the lotus throne. It is one of the world's largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statues.
Construction of the Tian Tan Buddha began in 1990 and was completed in 1993. It was officially opened to the public on December 29, 1993.
Visitors can reach the Tian Tan Buddha by taking the MTR to Tung Chung Station and then boarding the Ngong Ping Cable Car, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and sea. Alternatively, you can take a bus or a taxi to Ngong Ping village.
Visiting the outdoor areas of the Tian Tan Buddha is free of charge. However, there is an admission fee if you want to go inside the Buddha and view the exhibition beneath the statue which includes the Three Floors: The Hall of Universe, The Hall of Benevolent Merit and The Hall of Remembrance.
Visitors are expected to dress respectfully when visiting the Tian Tan Buddha as it is a religious site. Clothing should be conservative, covering shoulders and knees.
Apart from visiting the Big Buddha, you can explore the Po Lin Monastery, which is nearby. The monastery features beautiful architecture, ornate decorations, and a vegetarian restaurant. There are also several hiking trails in the area and the Ngong Ping Village with shops and eateries.
The best time to visit is during the week to avoid large crowds. Weekends and public holidays can get very busy. In terms of weather, the months from October to April offer cooler and more pleasant temperatures, while visibility is generally better during the winter months.
One of the most significant events is the Birthday of the Buddha, which is celebrated on the eighth day of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, usually falling in May. Other Buddhist festivals and events are also observed throughout the year.
Facilities for tourists include a visitor center, restrooms, a few eateries, and a gift shop in Ngong Ping Village. Wheelchair rental and baby stroller services are also available for those traveling with young children or those who require mobility assistance.
