Topra Ashokan Pillar: A Historical Beacon in Yamunanagar, Haryana

The Topra Ashokan Pillar, located in Topra Kalan Village in Yamunanagar, Haryana, India, stands as a testimony to the rich historical and cultural heritage of India. This pillar is one of the several columns erected by the great Mauryan Emperor Ashoka during his reign in the 3rd century BCE.

The Historical Significance of the Topra Ashokan Pillar

The pillars of Ashoka are renowned for their architectural brilliance and their Mauryan polish, a lustrous finish that has withstood the ravages of time. The inscriptions on these pillars comprise some of the earliest messages promoting 'Dhamma' (the Buddha's teachings), as part of Ashoka's campaign to spread the principles of Buddhism across his empire.

The Topra Ashokan Pillar was originally located at Topra Kalan Village before it was relocated. The illustrious Feroz Shah Tughlaq, during his reign in the 14th century, decided to move the pillar to Delhi, which he accomplished using an elaborate transportation method that involved the use of carts and rolling it over logs. This pillar was then re-erected in what is now known as Feroz Shah Kotla, where it still stands. However, the original site at Topra Kalan continues to attract historians and enthusiasts.
