Turkmenbashi, formerly known as Krasnovodsk, is a port city in western Turkmenistan, located on the shores of the Caspian Sea. It is the administrative center of the Balkan Province and serves as a major industrial and transportation hub within the country. Named in honour of the first President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov, whose self-given title was 'Turkmenbashi' or 'Leader of the Turkmen', the city has undergone significant development and modernization under his rule and afterwards. Turkmenbashi is known for its oil refineries and has become an important export route for the oil and gas industry in the region. The city's port is also a pivotal component of Turkmenistan's maritime traffic, providing an outlet to the Caspian Sea for both commercial and passenger services. With its scenic surroundings, Turkmenbashi is trying to position itself as a tourist destination, particularly for those interested in exploring the Caspian Sea’s coastlines, its maritime history, and the natural reserves nearby, such as the Hazar Nature Reserve. Turkmenbashi also acts as a gateway to the stunning landscapes of the Balkan region and other tourist attractions in Turkmenistan.
