The Upper and Lower Caravanserais in Sheki, Azerbaijan, are remarkable historical complexes dating back to the 18th century, nestled in the picturesque town which was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road. These caravanserais are splendid examples of the architecture of the period, designed to accommodate travelers and merchants. After crossing perilous mountain paths, merchants used to rest here, trading silk, spices, and other goods. The Upper Caravanserai, now transformed into a hotel, allows visitors to experience the ambiance of the historic Silk Road. It consists of a massive rectangular structure with a spacious courtyard surrounded by high walls and equipped with traditional facilities such as baths and a mosque. The Lower Caravanserai, on the other hand, is utilized as a marketplace and crafts center, offering a glimpse into the region's cultural life. Both caravanserais feature intricate geometric patterns in their brickwork, reflecting the distinctive architectural style of Sheki, which is characterized by its combination of functional and aesthetic qualities.
