Food History of Veligandu, Maldives

The Maldives, including Veligandu Island, has a cuisine that has been influenced by the Indian subcontinent, Arabia, and the surrounding Indian Ocean. The island's historical food traditions reflect its tropical climate, with an abundance of seafood, coconut, and tropical fruits playing a central role. The early Maldivian diet was primarily pescatarian, using fish like tuna as the main protein source, owing to the abundant marine life surrounding the islands. This was supplemented with home-grown vegetables and fruits, such as breadfruit, taro, sweet potatoes, and bananas. The Maldivian cuisine has evolved over time, incorporating spices and flavors from trade routes and foreign settlers.
