Vijayanagara Fort Tourism

Vijayanagara Fort, located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, is a historically significant fortification originally constructed by the Vijayanagara rulers in the 1550s. Later, the Nayaks and the Marathas, who succeeded the Vijayanagara Empire in Thanjavur, made several modifications to the fort. It is situated roughly two kilometers from the famous Brihadeeswarar Temple, amidst the bustling city of Thanjavur. The fort encompasses various structures such as the Tanjore Palace, Sangeetha Mahal, and the Saraswathi Mahal Library which houses a vast collection of manuscripts. The fort's architecture is a blend of military engineering and unique Dravidian elements. It also showcases extensive ramparts and deep moats that aided in its defense. Within its premises, one can visit the arsenal tower and a tall bell tower. Despite enduring assaults and the passage of time, the Vijayanagara Fort stands as a testament to the opulent history of the Thanjavur region.
