The Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil, is a magnificent example of Chola architecture in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. Built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 AD, this temple is famed for its architectural prowess signified by its enormous vimana (temple tower) which is about 66 meters high. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the 'Great Living Chola Temples'. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and showcases the richness of Dravidian temple design with its intricate carvings, massive colonnades, and sanctified spaces. The complex is adorned with frescoes, sculptures, and a colossal Nandi (sacred bull) statue. The temple's walls are inscribed with the deeds of Raja Raja Chola, and it has been a center of culture and art for centuries. The grandeur of the temple is not just in its scale but also in the astronomical expertise; the temple's shadow never falls on the ground at noon during any part of the year. This engineering marvel stands as a testimony to the grand vision of the Chola dynasty.
