How To Reach Yokohama

Welcome to Yokohama, Japan

Yokohama, the vibrant and bustling seaport city in Japan, is a fantastic destination for tourists looking to explore a blend of traditional culture and modern attractions. Here's how you can reach Yokohama:

Traveling to Yokohama

By Air

Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) and Narita International Airport are the main entry points for international visitors. Haneda, being closer to Yokohama, is about a 30-minute drive away, while Narita is about a 90-minute drive from Yokohama.

  • From Haneda Airport, you can take a direct bus or a connecting train to reach Yokohama.
  • From Narita Airport, you have the option of direct express buses or trains such as the Narita Express (N'EX) to get to Yokohama Station.

By Train

Extremely efficient and convenient, Japan's rail network, including the Shinkansen (Bullet Train), is an excellent way to reach Yokohama. If you're coming from Tokyo Station, it's only a 25-minute ride to Yokohama Station on the Tokaido Line. The Shinkansen can also be taken from other major cities like Osaka and Kyoto, and it will take you to Shin-Yokohama Station, from where you can connect to the Yokohama municipal subway to get to the city center.

By Bus

Long-distance and highway buses connect Yokohama with various locations in Japan. These buses are a cost-effective option, although slower than trains.

By Car

You could also travel to Yokohama by car. The city is well connected via various expressways. Keep in mind that driving in Japan requires an international driving permit, and that parking and traffic can be complicated in urban areas.

By Boat

Being a prominent port city, Yokohama is accessible by sea routes as well. The Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal welcomes cruise ships from international and domestic destinations.

Notable Tips:

  • It's recommended to buy a Japan Rail Pass if you're planning to travel extensively around Japan; it can save you a lot of money on train travel.
  • When traveling in Japan, the rechargeable Suica or Pasmo cards can be used for convenient payment on public transportation.
  • Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time when planning your route from the airports as some services may not run late at night.
