If you are planning a short religious getaway in Himachal Pradesh, or you want a calm base for exploring the lower hills of Una and Kangra, Chintpurni is a practical place to know about. This guide will help you understand how to reach Chintpurni, when to visit, what to do around the temple town, where to stay, and how to plan a smooth trip without last-minute confusion.
Where Chintpurni Is and Why It Matters
Chintpurni is a small temple town in Una district, in the lower hills of Himachal Pradesh. It is best known for the Chintpurni Temple, dedicated to Mata Chhinnamastika, and it draws pilgrims from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, and nearby parts of Himachal throughout the year. The town sits at a modest hill elevation, so the weather is cooler than the plains but not as cold as higher Himachal destinations.
For most travellers, Chintpurni works as a short stay destination rather than a long holiday base. A 1-night or 2-night trip is usually enough if your main purpose is darshan and a relaxed visit to nearby hill points. If you are combining it with Una, Kangra, Dharamshala, or the Pong Dam region, you can easily turn it into a 3-4 day Himachal circuit.
How to Reach Chintpurni
Chintpurni is well connected by road, especially from the Punjab and Chandigarh side. The town is roughly 90-100 km from Chandigarh, around 75-85 km from Hoshiarpur, and about 60-70 km from Una, depending on your route. Travel time is usually 2.5 to 4 hours from Chandigarh and around 2 hours from Hoshiarpur, but weekend traffic and hill road conditions can add time.
By Road
The easiest way to reach Chintpurni is by car, taxi, or self-drive. Roads are generally manageable, though the last stretch involves hill driving and may feel narrow in parts. If you are travelling during festivals or Navratri, expect slow-moving traffic near the temple zone and keep extra time in hand.
By Train
The nearest major rail access points are in the broader Una-Hoshiarpur belt, but for most travellers the practical option is to arrive by train to a larger nearby station and continue by road. Exact onward connections vary, so it is wise to check current schedules before making a booking. If you prefer comfort, a taxi from the railhead is usually simpler than changing multiple local vehicles.
By Air
The nearest airports are regional airports in Himachal and Punjab depending on your route, but they are not as convenient as road travel for a Chintpurni-only trip. Most visitors coming by air still use a taxi or private transfer for the final leg. If you are landing in Chandigarh or Amritsar, Chintpurni can be included comfortably in a road trip plan.
Best Time to Visit Chintpurni
Chintpurni can be visited almost year-round, but your experience changes with the season. For pleasant weather and easier movement, the best months are February to April and September to November. These windows are especially good if you want comfortable temple visits and short excursions nearby.
May to June can be warm in the lower hills, though mornings and evenings remain manageable. July to August brings monsoon showers, slippery roads, and occasional travel delays, so plan carefully if you are driving. December to January is cool and pleasant for some travellers, but early mornings and nights can feel chilly, and fog can affect visibility in the lower stretches.
If your trip is for darshan, Navratri periods see the highest crowd levels. The atmosphere is lively, but queues can be long, accommodation fills fast, and transport costs may rise. Confirm rates and temple timings before booking, since they can change with seasons and festivals.
What to Do in Chintpurni
Seek Darshan at Chintpurni Temple
The main reason people come here is the temple itself. The approach is straightforward, and the area around the shrine usually has a steady flow of pilgrims, shopkeepers, and priests. Give yourself enough time for darshan, as waiting times can vary from a few minutes to over an hour during busy days.
Dress modestly, keep your footwear outside the temple area, and carry small cash for offerings, prasad, and basic purchases. Temple procedures and queue arrangements may change, so follow local instructions when you arrive.
Walk Around the Bazaar
The temple market is small but useful. You will find prasad, flowers, coconuts, religious items, tea stalls, snacks, and simple eateries. It is a good place to buy what you need before darshan rather than carrying everything from home.
This is also the easiest spot to experience the town’s everyday rhythm. You will notice that Chintpurni moves at a slower pace than the bigger temple towns in Himachal, which many travellers find refreshing after a long drive.
Take a Short Scenic Drive
If you have your own car or a local taxi, take a short drive in the surrounding hills after darshan. The roads around Una district offer open views, village life, and a gentler hill landscape compared with the steeper parts of Himachal. You do not need a full-day excursion to enjoy the setting; even a one- to two-hour drive can make the trip feel more complete.
Nearby Places You Can Add to Your Itinerary
Chintpurni works well with a few nearby stops, especially if you are building a weekend route. The distances are not long, but you should still plan using road time rather than straight-line distance.
- Jwalamukhi: A well-known temple town in Kangra district, often combined with Chintpurni in a single pilgrimage circuit. Travel time can be around 2 to 3 hours by road, depending on your route.
- Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: Better for travellers who want cafés, monasteries, and a longer mountain stay. These are farther away, so combine them only if you have at least 3-4 days.
- Una: Useful for transit, shopping, and as a practical overnight halt if you prefer better transport connectivity.
- Pong Dam region: Suitable for nature lovers and birdwatchers, especially in cooler months when migratory birds are around.
If you want a simple 2-day plan, keep your schedule focused on Chintpurni and one additional stop. Trying to squeeze in too much will leave you more tired than satisfied, especially in peak pilgrimage season.
Where to Stay in Chintpurni
Accommodation in and around the town is usually simple and pilgrim-friendly. You will find dharamshalas, budget guesthouses, and a few mid-range hotels in nearby areas. For most travellers, the right choice depends on how close you want to stay to the temple and how much comfort you expect.
| Stay Type | Typical Price Range | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Dharamshala / basic lodge | ?500-?1,200 per night | Pilgrims, short overnight stays |
| Budget hotel or guesthouse | ?1,200-?2,500 per night | Families, couples, small groups |
| Mid-range hotel | ?2,500-?4,500 per night | Travellers wanting cleaner rooms and better service |
Rates can rise sharply during Navratri, weekends, and festival dates, so book early if your travel dates are fixed. If you are travelling with elders, choose a place that reduces walking distance to the temple and has easy parking or vehicle access.
What and Where to Eat
Food in Chintpurni is straightforward, with an emphasis on North Indian vegetarian meals, tea, snacks, and temple-side prasad. Do not expect a large restaurant scene. Instead, look for clean, busy eateries where turnover is high and food is made fresh.
A simple meal can cost around ?80-?200 per person at local dhabas or small restaurants, while a more comfortable sit-down meal may be around ?200-?400 per person. During temple rush hours, keep your expectations practical and eat at places that appear active and well maintained.
If you are sensitive to spice or want lighter food, carry dry snacks, digestive tablets, and a water bottle. It is also wise to keep small cash handy because smaller food stalls may not accept digital payments consistently.
Useful Travel Tips for a Smooth Visit
Chintpurni is an easy trip if you plan like a pilgrim rather than a city tourist. Start early, especially if you are driving from Chandigarh, Delhi, or Amritsar. Morning travel usually means lighter traffic, cooler temperatures, and a calmer temple experience.
- Carry cash: Small vendors, prasad counters, and parking points may not always accept cards or UPI reliably.
- Keep comfortable footwear: You may walk on inclines, steps, and uneven surfaces around the temple area.
- Book ahead in peak season: Hotels and guesthouses can fill quickly during Navratri and long weekends.
- Travel light: A small bag is easier to manage in crowded temple areas.
- Respect local customs: Follow instructions from temple staff and local volunteers without arguing over queue rules.
If you are travelling with senior citizens, plan rest breaks and avoid late-night road journeys in monsoon or foggy winter conditions. A calm pace makes the trip far more enjoyable.
Suggested Trip Plans
For a one-day trip, leave early, reach Chintpurni by late morning, complete darshan, have lunch, spend some time in the bazaar, and return the same day. This works best for travellers coming from Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, or nearby towns.
For a 2-day trip, arrive in the afternoon, stay overnight near the temple, attend morning darshan the next day, and add a short side trip to Jwalamukhi, Una, or a nearby scenic drive. This is the most comfortable plan for families and elderly travellers.
For a 3-day plan, combine Chintpurni with a broader Himachal route such as Dharamshala, Kangra, or the Pong Dam side. This gives you a mix of pilgrimage, hill views, and a less rushed pace.
