AkBaital Pass, Murghab - Food History

The Ak-Baital Pass, located in the Pamir Mountains near Murghab in Tajikistan, has a unique food culture shaped largely by its high altitude environment and the semi-nomadic lifestyle of its inhabitants. The cuisine in this region has developed to provide high-energy meals that can keep one warm in the harsh, cold climate. Traditional diets consist of a robust mix of dairy products from yaks and other livestock, as well as a limited variety of vegetables and grains that can survive in the rugged terrain.
