Al-Khazneh, also known as The Treasury, is one of the most elaborate temples in the ancient Arab Nabatean Kingdom city of Petra. This architectural masterpiece is carved out of a sandstone rock face and has classical Greek-influenced architecture. It is believed to have been constructed in the 1st century AD as a mausoleum or crypt. Al-Khazneh is situated in a narrow gorge and is the first glimpse of Petra for visitors walking through the Siq, which is the main entrance leading to the city. Its facade is adorned with Corinthian columns, friezes, figures, and other intricate details that have been preserved for centuries. The purpose of the structure is not entirely clear, though it is commonly thought to have been a temple or a place to store documents. Al-Khazneh has been popularized in modern times by its appearance in various forms of media, most notably in the film 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'. Despite its name, it is unlikely that the Treasury ever contained treasure. Instead, its grandness may have been intended to display the wealth and culture of the Nabateans.
