The Siq is a narrow gorge that serves as the grand entrance to the ancient city of Petra, located in southern Jordan. This 1.2 kilometer long natural geological feature is flanked by towering cliffs that reach up to 80 meters in height. The passage was formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and has been used as the main entrance to Petra for centuries. Throughout history, the Siq has been a marvel for travelers embarking on a journey to Petra, offering a dramatic approach to the city's famous Treasury (Al-Khazneh). The walls of the Siq showcase a blend of natural beauty and human ingenuity, with various carvings and niches that were used for religious and practical purposes. Water channels run along both walls of the Siq, remnants of the advanced Nabataean hydraulic system that brought water into the city. Walking through the Siq, visitors experience a kaleidoscope of colors and rock formations, leading to the breathtaking view of the Treasury as they exit the gorge.
