Type of destination: Archaeological Site
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Petra, an archaeological site in Jordan's southwestern desert, is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Established possibly as early as the 5th century BC as the capital city of the Nabateans, it is often referred to as the 'Rose City' due to the color of the stone from which it is carved. Among its most renowned monuments is the 'Treasury' (Al-Khazneh), a temple famed for its ornate, Greek-style facade, and known from blockbuster movies such as 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.' Petra By Night is a magical way to see part of the rock city by candlelight and explore its ancient buildings, carved directly into the pink sandstone cliffs, under the stars. The event typically runs on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, starting at the Petra Visitor Centre. Visitors walk through the Siq to the Treasury, lit with over 1,500 candles, creating an alluring ambiance complemented by Bedouin music. This night event offers a unique perspective of the ancient city, providing a serene, mystical experience distinct from the daytime crowds.
