How to Reach Al-Khazneh

Al-Khazneh, also known as The Treasury, is one of the most majestic and iconic monuments in the ancient city of Petra, Jordan. Reaching Al-Khazneh involves a combination of travel and a bit of hiking.

By Air

The nearest international airport to Petra is Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) in Amman. From there, you can:

  • Rent a car and drive approximately 3 hours to reach Petra.
  • Take a JETT bus or a minibus which provide regular services to Petra.
  • Arrange for a private transfer or a taxi. However, this option is generally more expensive.

By Road

If you're coming from Aqaba or other neighboring areas, renting a car is a good option. Here are the directions:

  • From Aqaba, it's about a 2-hour drive to Petra via the Desert Highway.
  • From Amman, take the Desert Highway south to Ma'an and then follow the signs to Petra.

Once in Petra

Upon reaching the Visitor Center in Petra, you can commence your journey to Al-Khazneh on foot or by horse-drawn carriage, which is suitable for those who prefer not to walk.

You will enter through the Siq, a narrow gorge that leads directly to Al-Khazneh. The walk is approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) and provides breathtaking views and photo opportunities. The pathway is mostly flat but does include some uneven terrain.

Note: Remember to wear comfortable shoes and carry water, as the walk can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes depending on your pace.
