Food History of Babur Gardens (Bagh-e Babur), Faizabad, Afghanistan

The Babur Gardens, also known as Bagh-e Babur, is a historic garden in Afghanistan that dates back to the early 16th century. Created by the founder of the Mughal Empire, Zahir-ud-Din Muhammad Babur, it reflects a cross-cultural exchange of culinary practices between the Central Asian, Indian, and Persian traditions. Over the centuries, the gardens have not only been a place of rest and leisure but also a hub for social and culinary gatherings.

Babur himself was very fond of gardens and often expressed his passion for fruits and elaborate feasts in his autobiography, the Baburnama. The diverse flora within the gardens provided a variety of fresh produce that influenced the diet of those who frequented the area. While we know that Babur abstained from eating beef, his appreciation of other meats, fruits, and aromatic spices was notable.
