Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Kendrapara district of Odisha, India, is a unique ecosystem comprising mangroves, rivers, estuaries, and backwaters. Spanning an area of approximately 672 square kilometers, it is one of India's largest mangrove ecosystems and was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1975. This biodiversity hotspot is home to a plethora of flora and fauna, including the saltwater crocodile, white crocodile (albino), Indian python, king cobra, and many species of birds. The sanctuary is crisscrossed by a network of creeks with Bay of Bengal on the east, which provides a unique environment for wildlife to thrive and for visitors to explore. The Gahirmatha Beach nearby is renowned for the mass nesting of Olive Ridley sea turtles. The sanctuary also has an ancient temple called the Bhitarkanika Temple, creating a blend of natural beauty with historical significance.
