Type of destination: Landmark/Border Gate
Bhutan Gate is the primary and the most prominent entry point to Bhutan from India. It is situated in the bustling border town of Phuentsholing, which adjoins the Indian town of Jaigaon, West Bengal. This ornate gate serves as the gateway between the two countries and is a symbol of the friendly Indo-Bhutanese relations. The architecture of the gate is reflective of traditional Bhutanese styles, featuring intricate designs and a combination of white, red, and golden colors, providing visitors with a grand welcome to the Himalayan Kingdom. Bhutan Gate is not only a checkpoint for immigration but also a popular spot for tourists to take photographs and marks the start of their journey into Bhutan. Phuentsholing itself acts as the commercial center of Bhutan and the gate opens up to its main street filled with shops, restaurants, and official buildings. With the seamless blend of Indian and Bhutanese cultures, this border area is unique, displaying diversity in terms of people, languages, and the lifestyles of both nations.
