The Big Buddha temple, known locally as Wat Phra Yai, is located on the small island Koh Faan which is connected to the main island of Koh Samui by a short causeway. It is one of the most famous landmarks on the island and can be easily reached by various modes of transport.
Upon arrival at Samui Airport (USM), you can hire a taxi or a songthaew (a shared pick-up truck with two rows of seating) to reach the Big Buddha. The journey should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
If you're coming from Chaweng, the most popular beach town in Koh Samui, Big Buddha is located in the northeast of the island. You can rent a motorcycle, car, or take a songthaew. The drive is around 15 minutes from Chaweng Beach.
From Lamai Beach, expect a 30 to 40-minute ride to reach the Big Buddha. Private taxis are available, but always confirm the price before starting your journey.
For a more authentic experience, you can opt for a tuk-tuk, but be aware that it can be slightly more expensive. P>
If you're on a budget, local buses or songthaews run throughout the day and are the cheapest mode of transportation. These communal pick-up trucks operate like buses with set routes but no fixed schedules.
When preparing for your visit, remember that the Big Buddha Temple is an active place of worship. Dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees, and be prepared to remove shoes upon entering the temple.
Operating hours are generally from early morning to sunset, and there is no admission fee, but donations are welcome to support the temple's upkeep.
