Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal, India, known for its rich culture, history, and the famous terracotta temples. This small town, located about 152 km from Kolkata, was the capital of the Mallabhum kingdom, once ruled by the Malla Kings. It is accredited for its unique Malla architecture visible in the striking terracotta temples that narrate mythological stories through exquisite carvings. These temples date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and showcase the blend of classical Bengali architecture with that of the Odishan style. Bishnupur is also noted for its traditional craft of Baluchari sarees and its school of music known as the Bishnupur Gharana. The town's landscape is dotted with ancient ruins, laterite formations, and local water bodies like Lalbandh, Krishnabandh, and Pokabandh. The Bishnupur Mela, held every year in December, is a significant event that exhibits local arts, crafts, and cultural practices.
