Madanmohan Temple is one of the most revered historical temples located in Bishnupur, a town in Bankura district of West Bengal, India. This temple was built in the late 17th century by King Durjana Singh Deva of the Malla dynasty, dedicated to the Hindu god Krishna, called Madanmohan. The temple is exemplary of the rich Terracotta style of Bengali architecture, marked by its elaborate and intricate terracotta ornaments. This iconic structure, now under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, stands as a testament to the cultural flourish of the Malla period and the Bengal school of architecture. The temple’s pyramidal superstructure over a square base, encompassing the char-chala or four-sloped roof, along with beautiful carvings depicting scenes from the epic Mahabharata and the life of Krishna, make it a major tourist and pilgrimage attraction. Surrounding the temple are remnants of fortified walls that speak of Bishnupur’s historical significance as a seat of power in the region.
