How To Reach Cave Of Hira

How to Reach the Cave of Hira, Mecca (Makkah), Saudi Arabia

The Cave of Hira, known as Jabal al-Noor or the Mountain of Light, is situated near Mecca in Saudi Arabia. As it is an important religious site, it is visited by many Muslims every year. Here are the steps to reach this significant destination:

Step 1: Travel to Mecca (Makkah)

  • Fly into King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) in Jeddah, which is the closest international airport to Mecca, situated approximately 100 km away.
  • Alternatively, if you are travelling domestically within Saudi Arabia, consider flying into Taif Regional Airport (TIF), which is about 120 km from Mecca.
  • Pre-arrange a taxi or shuttle service to transport you from the airport to Mecca, bearing in mind only Muslims are allowed into the city.

Step 2: Accommodation and Local Travel

  • Book your accommodation in Mecca in advance, especially if you are planning to visit during the Hajj period when millions of pilgrims arrive in the city.
  • Use local taxis or the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro to navigate around Mecca. The metro is particularly useful during the Hajj when traffic increases significantly.

Step 3: Journey to the Cave of Hira

  • You can reach the Cave of Hira, located on Jabal al-Noor, by taking a taxi or private car, as there is no public transportation directly to the mountain.
  • The route starts at the base of Jabal al-Noor, and visitors must hike up the mountain to reach the cave. The hike is moderately challenging and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on individual pace.
  • Inside the cave, space is limited, so be prepared for a possible wait during peak visiting times.

Important Tips:

  • Ensure that you are dressed appropriately for both the religious significance of the site and the physical demands of the hike.
  • Remember to carry water, a hat, and sunblock to protect against the heat, especially during the summer months.
  • Visiting the cave is free of charge, but hiring a guide, if desired, will come at a cost.
  • Note that non-Muslims are not permitted to enter Mecca, and thus cannot access the Cave of Hira.

Make sure to respect the sacred nature of the site and be considerate of others during your visit. The Cave of Hira offers not just a piece of Islamic history but also stunning views of the surrounding area once you reach the top.
