Chaukhandi Stupa is a historical monument situated in Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India. It serves as a revered Buddhist pilgrim spot, marking the location where Lord Buddha first met his disciples after attaining enlightenment. The stupa is a lofty mound of brick, whose square edifice is surrounded by an octagonal tower. This structure has evolved over centuries and carries significance for the Buddhist community. Archaeologically, it reflects a terraced temple during the Gupta period (4th to 6th century CE) but got its present shape during the Mughal times when Govardhan, the son of Raja Todarmal, gave it an octagonal tower to commemorate Humayun's visit. The Stupa's lush green surroundings offer a serene atmosphere, and its historical significance attracts pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.
