Sarnath is a renowned and historically significant site located at a distance of about 10 kilometers north-east of Varanasi City, near the confluence of the Ganges and Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India. It's one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage destinations because it is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma after his enlightenment. Sarnath holds a collection of ancient ruins which include the Dhamek Stupa, the Chaukhandi Stupa, and the Ashoka Pillar. The stupa is a significant edifice marking the spot of Buddha's first sermon. Also, the Sarnath Archaeological Museum houses a vast collection of sculptures and artifacts found at the site. Beside its Buddhist heritage, Sarnath is also a revered place for Jains, being the birthplace of Shreyansanatha, the eleventh Jain Tirthankara. The serene and spiritual atmosphere of Sarnath attracts pilgrims and tourists from all over the world, looking to understand more about Buddhism or simply to soak in the tranquil vibe of this ancient town.
