Dhamek Stupa is a prominent Buddhist site located in Sarnath, near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India. It marks the spot where Buddha delivered his first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, outlining the principles of his teachings about life and the path to nirvana, now known as the 'Dharma Chakra Pravartana' (Turning of the Wheel of Dharma). The stupa stands at a height of 43.6 meters and dates back to 500 CE, although it was originally built in 249 BCE by Emperor Ashoka. Its cylindrical shape is a representation of ancient Buddhist architecture. The stupa is made of stone and brick, with intricate floral carvings and figures made in Gupta-era style. It has been reconstructed several times throughout its history. The site is considered sacred and is a significant place of pilgrimage for Buddhists from around the world, forming part of the larger complex of ancient structures and temples in Sarnath, associated with Buddha's life and teachings.

Beautiful stupa in Sarnath
The Dhamek stupa is part of the ruins at Sarnath. It’s majestic with some decorations on the outer wall. The stupa was built by Ashoka and then rebuilt again.

Nice
A landmark in Sarnath, Dhamek Stupa is an excellent spot for clicks and views. You really admire the skill and passion with which this massive stupa must have been built so many hundreds of years ago!

Very Bad. Do not go.
Horrific. Took the whole family expecting a pure Buddhist beauty but my son took one glimps at it and took off crying.

Buddhist Excavation Site
Exceptionally peaceful place. It has well maintained lawns, the ruins of Ashokan Pillar, and this towering stupa. A serene, quiet, green escape from the din and clamour of Varanasi.

The Stupas at Sarnath
This was the place at Sarnath where the Buddha gave his first sermon to a mere 5 disciples. Beautifully maintained grounds and monuments ...a must see.
