Best Time To Visit Chonji Lake (Samjiyon) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Chonji Lake, Samjiyon, North Korea

Chonji Lake, also known as Heaven Lake, is situated in the crater of Paektu Mountain on the border between North Korea and China. Due to its geographical location and high elevation, the area features a demanding climate with long, harsh winters. The ideal time to visit Chonji Lake is during the short summer season, which spans from late June to early September. During this period, the weather is relatively mild, and the surrounding landscapes come to life with wildflowers and lush greenery, providing hikers with spectacular views. However, it's important to note that the weather can still be quite unpredictable with occasional rain and fog, which can obscure the lake's view.

Travelers seeking to witness the lake when it is most likely to be free of ice should aim for late July through August. This is when the temperature is warmest, ranging from around 10 to 22 degrees Celsius during the day, which is pleasant for outdoor activities. However, even in summer, it's wise to prepare for sudden temperature drops and wind gusts due to the high altitude. Remember that this remote destination requires careful planning as it can only be visited as part of a guided tour provided by North Korean authorities or various tour operating agencies specializing in travel to the region. Visiting during this window ensures that visitors will enjoy Chonji Lake in more accessible and visually stunning conditions.
