Best Time to Visit Chuhuo Special Scenic Area

The Chuhuo Special Scenic Area, located in Pingtung, Taiwan, is known for its unique geological phenomena where natural gas seeping out of the earth ignites and creates small, persistent fires. The best time to visit the area to witness this curious spectacle is during the dry season, which typically runs from November through April. During these months, the weather is relatively stable, with lower chances of rain that could extinguish the fires. Furthermore, the temperatures are cooler and more comfortable for outdoor activities, with averages ranging from 20-25°C. It's especially picturesque to visit during the late afternoon leading into the early evening when the flames become more visible as the daylight fades, providing an enchanting experience as you watch the ground flicker with firelight against a dusky backdrop.

Visitors should consider avoiding the rainy season, which spans from May to October, due to the increased likelihood of precipitation that can dampen the natural flames and result in fewer visible fires. Moreover, the summer months can bring hot and humid conditions, making outdoor excursions less comfortable. If you plan on visiting during a holiday or weekend, it is recommended to go early in the day to avoid crowds. The Lunar New Year holiday, in particular, can be an interesting time to visit as there are often additional cultural celebrations occurring, but be prepared for larger gatherings of people. Always check the local weather forecasts and consider the lunar calendar as well, as the flames are said to be particularly impressive during a full moon.
