The Galle Dutch Fort, also known as the Galle Fort, is a historical, archaeological, and architectural heritage monument and is one of the best-preserved sea forts in South Asia. Built initially by the Portuguese in the 16th century and extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century, the fort is a classic example of the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions during the colonial period. Located in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, the fort has witnessed numerous historical events and has stood the test of time, surviving both natural and human-induced challenges. Today, it is a vibrant cultural hub with a mix of museums, galleries, shops, cafes, and residential quarters. Its thick granite walls, bastions, and a network of atmospheric streets are steeped in history, with many buildings displaying Dutch colonial architecture. The Galle Dutch Fort is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural and historical significance, drawing visitors from around the world for its unique blend of heritage and charm.
