Type of destination: Museum
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
The Maritime Archaeology Museum in Galle, Sri Lanka, is a fascinating destination for those interested in the nautical history of the Indian Ocean region. Housed in a 1671 Dutch warehouse within the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the museum presents Sri Lanka's maritime heritage through a variety of artifacts and exhibits. It provides a glimpse into underwater archaeology and showcases relics recovered from shipwrecks and sunken vessels that date back to the 4th century BCE. The collection includes navigation equipment, maritime vessels, artillery pieces, and personal effects of sailors that sailed the waters surrounding the island. The museum also focuses on the biological and geological underwater aspects, offering insight into marine ecosystems and their inhabitants. The artifacts serve as a testament to the ancient trade routes that connected Sri Lanka to the rest of the world. The building itself, restored after the 2004 tsunami, is an example of the region's colonial architecture and offers a window into the past.

National Maritime Archaeological Museum
This is another museum in the Galle Fort. It only opened in 1992 but the building was a Dutch Warehouse from 1671. The adjoining UNESCO Maritime Archaeology Unit was destroyed by the tsunami in 2004

Not worth it
Very basic stuff, not much to see, everything spread out to fill up the space. €10 entry fee is asking far to much.
