Galle Lighthouse, also known as Pointe de Galle Light, is an onshore lighthouse located within the historic Galle Fort in Galle, Sri Lanka. This iconic lighthouse stands at an impressive height, casting light over the Indian Ocean and serving as a navigational aid for ships approaching the Galle Harbour. Erected in 1848, it is Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, although the original lighthouse was destroyed by fire and the current structure dates back to 1939. The white, rounded tower is built in a classical British colonial style and is a well-known symbol of the city. Galle Lighthouse is a significant landmark within the Galle Fort, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved sea fortifications in South Asia. Surrounded by stunning sea views, the lighthouse is set amongst picturesque colonial buildings, museums, and an array of cozy cafes and boutiques. Visitors to Galle Lighthouse can enjoy the scenic beauty and take a leisurely walk around the historical fort walls, experiencing a mix of Sri Lankan history, architecture, and culture.
The lighthouse itself is very picturesque
Didn't realise it was a working lighthouse still, only found out when it's beam cut in to the night.
