How To Reach Ganden Monastery

Getting to Ganden Monastery, Lashan, China

Ganden Monastery, located about 40 kilometers northeast of Lhasa, is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. Here's how you can reach this sacred site:

By Air

Firstly, visitors need to reach Lhasa. Lhasa Gonggar Airport is the main airport that serves Lhasa and is well-connected with a number of major Chinese cities and some international destinations. Upon arriving at the airport, further transportation will be required to reach Ganden Monastery.

By Train

Lhasa is also accessible by the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, one of the highest railways in the world. The train journey offers spectacular views of the Tibetan Plateau. From the Lhasa Train Station, you'll need to arrange for subsequent travel to the monastery.

By Road

Public Bus: Local public transport to Ganden Monastery from Lhasa is limited. Sometimes, dedicated pilgrimage buses travel to Ganden, departing from Lhasa's Jokhang area.

Tourist Bus: A more reliable option is taking a tourist bus, which frequently operates between Lhasa and Ganden Monastery. These buses can be arranged by local travel agencies or hotels.

Taxi or Private Vehicle: Hiring a taxi or a private vehicle offers the most flexibility and convenience. It allows visitors to travel at their own pace and enjoy the scenic views along the way.

Tour Packages

Many visitors opt for an organized tour which includes transportation to Gandan Monastery along with a guide. This is often the most hassle-free way to visit, ensuring that all permits and logistics are handled by the tour company.

Travel Permit

Note: All foreign visitors to Tibet are required to have a Tibet Travel Permit in addition to their Chinese visa. Visitors cannot travel to Ganden Monastery without this permit. Permits are usually arranged by tour operators as part of the tour package.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Ganden Monastery is from May to October when the weather is more favorable. Winters can be extremely cold and may not be suitable for all travelers.

Always make sure to check the current travel conditions and permit regulations before planning your trip, as these can change frequently.
