Gorakhpur, a city in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh, has a rich historical tapestry that interweaves various cultural and religious narratives. While it may not have been traditionally prominent on the global tourism map, the continual development of local attractions and connectivity has cast a new spotlight on this region.

Early Beginnings of Gorakhpur Tourism

In the early days, tourism in Gorakhpur was largely driven by pilgrimages and the spiritual significance of its temples. It has always been a vital city for Buddhists, Hindus, and followers of other Indian religions. The famous Gorakhnath Temple, which the city is named after, has been an important pilgrimage site for centuries.

The Growth of Connectivity

The establishment of railway lines during the British era was a turning point for Gorakhpur, enhancing its accessibility and slowly attracting more visitors. Gorakhpur holds the record for the world's longest railway platform, symbolizing its role as a transportation hub from a historic perspective.

Recent Developments

In recent years, efforts by the government to promote tourism have seen the creation of improved infrastructure and facilities. Places like the Gorakhnath Temple, Geeta Vatika, Arogya Mandir, and the Imambara have been augmented with better amenities for tourists.

A significant addition to Gorakhpur's tourism landscape is the Gorakhpur Terracotta Park, showcasing the local handicraft and terracotta work which is an intrinsic part of the town's heritage. Additionally, the establishment of the Buddham Sharnam Gachhami Park further strengthened the city’s religious tourism circuit, tracing the life of Lord Buddha with grand statues and serene surroundings.

Focus on Ecotourism and Conservation

The development of the Ramgarh Tal, a large lake in the city, into an ecotourism spot, highlights the latest trends in Gorakhpur's tourism sector with an emphasis on sustainability and nature. The Gorakhpur Zoo, officially called the Shaheed Ashfaq Ullah Khan Prani Udyan, has become a burgeoning attraction, offering educational and recreational experiences for visitors.

Impact of Literature and Arts

Gorakhpur has also achieved fame due to the presence of the Gorakhpur University and the prestigious publishing house, the Gita Press, which has imbued the city with a scholarly aura, attracting a different kind of intellectual tourism.

Cultural Festivals

Resilient in preserving its arts and culture, Gorakhpur organizes various festivals such as Khichadi Mela at the Gorakhnath Temple and the Gorakhpur Mahotsav, which is a celebration of the local arts, culture, crafts and cuisines, further validating the city’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and culturally rich tourism experience.
