Gurudongmar Lake, located at an altitude of 17,800 ft in North Sikkim, India, is one of the highest lakes in the world. It is named after Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Dongmar, who is said to have blessed it. The lake is revered by Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs alike. It lies in the northern part of the Kanchenjunga range, surrounded by snow-capped mountains which reflect beautifully on its crystal clear waters, offering stunning views. Such is its significance that even during the inhospitable winters, a part of the lake doesn't freeze. The challenging terrain leading up to the lake is an adventure in itself, passing through rugged mountain roads. The journey provides visitors with glimpses of Himalayan fauna and flora, and the serene ambiance at the lake provides a spiritual solace. Due to the high altitude, oxygen levels here are significantly lower and visitors are advised to be adequately acclimatized before making the journey.
