The lake, which is one of the highest located lakes in the world, sits at an altitude of 17,800 feet. Due to its elevation, it can experience extreme weather conditions, with the winter months often bringing heavy snow and freezing temperatures which can lead to the lake being completely frozen.
However, those who are fascinated by the beauty of ice and snow-covered landscapes may find the winter months, especially from December to April, equally enchanting despite the challenges. Road access is usually blocked due to snow during this time, making the lake largely inaccessible, thus planning a trip outside of these months is advisable. For the safest and most enjoyable experience, traveling with an experienced guide and ensuring acclimatization to high altitudes are essential. Also, be aware that due to its proximity to the Chinese border, visitors require a special permit to visit Gurudongmar Lake.
